Carl Zeiss Jena DDR Binoctem 7 x 50 T3M Multi-coated binoculars and case serial number 5886494 (1983.) This is a pair of genuineCarl Zeiss Jena East German binoculars clearly marked DDR and with thecorrect 7-digit serial number (see photos.)Launched by Carl Zeiss in 1931 as the worlds first “Nachtglas”specialised low-light binocular, the Binoctem 7 x 50 soon won a strongfollowing among serious users needing reliable optical performance even in themost testing of lighting conditions, for example at dawn and dusk. Added to that are the real benefits of wide-angle viewing including easy image acquisitionwhen either the binocular user (such as a mariner on a moving  deck) or the subject viewed (for example birdsin flight or sports action) are in motion. And this 1983 example is perhapsthe ultimate Binoctem as it features  East German Zeiss most advanced T3M full opticalmulti-coatings, a world first for Zeiss DDR and still regarded highlyfor their high contrast and excellent colour rendition. For full details and specificationplease see the Zeiss catalogue page included in the photos. These particular glasses are in mint, unmarked as new, condition, clearly having had hardly any use. Optics are perfect, totallyclear with no hint of haze, fungus or dust and perfectly collimated (no doubleimage or eye strain.) Lenses, prisms and optical coatings are all pristine, nochips, scratches or cleaning marks. Focusing and right diopter adjustments aresilk-smooth. Cosmetics are likewise immaculate, with unmarked paint andleather. (They even smell like new!) As a bonus (collectors please note) theyhave one of the very rare black (rather than standard brown) versions of the real leather case. These black caseswere never officially marketed and do not appear in any Zeiss literature. It ispossible that they were for special customers or VIPs (we may never know). But the case is very handsome in its striking black appearance. And I am happy to say that boththe case, its matching black shoulder strap and original black leather binocularlanyard are all present and in excellent condition. The binoculars viewbeautifully and are generally a joy to handle and use. And so we have possiblly theultimate Christmas gift for any collector of fine binoculars! The binoculars will be very carefully packed in a wellpadded box for dispatch and sent fully insured.
